Arguably one of the most recognisable views in Cambridge, King’s College across The Backs. This viewpoint faces East and it was my intention to capture a sunrise image, however, since the buildings are not lit up, the contrast between the sky and the buildings was too great. One very cold February evening I decided to attempt a night shot. The light was very dim from the moonlight and light from nearby streetlamps. However, I decided to photograph a long exposure and hope there was sufficient light. The resulting image took my breath away. It was only afterwards that I noticed there was a dim light inside the Chapel and a mist over The Backs. Long exposures of views that appear too dark can produce rich tones and extremely satisfying images.
