Centuries apart

Taken in 2004, this photograph is one of my first professional images. Commissioned by my flatmate to photograph the Gherkin (30 St Mary Axe) as a present for his girlfriend, I happily accepted the £50 (which I think included the print and travel costs) and travelled into London to find an angle on the building. At that time, the Gherkin was one of only a couple of skyscrapers in the City of London (the other being Tower42, formerly NatWest Tower) and so it was relatively easy to isolate for a shot. However, when walking along Tower Bridge Road, I observed this angle and captured the image, naming it “Centuries Apart”; 900 years apart! Due to the growth of the City of London this view cannot unfortunately be seen now. But I have my friend to thank for this photograph. I must note, however, I cannot be commissioned now for £50.
